Sorry for the down time on my little blog here, some things seem more important than blathering to myself and like 4 other people on the world wide web. Like getting stoned. And watching tv.
But! It is time to break the silence to write about a rather heated debate that has been growing in the recent weeks between me and several of my friends. Would a Bruce Lee clone be naturally inclined towards martial arts, primarily kung fu, OR would he be a regular child with no special inclination or motivation to pursue martial arts.
Where I believe the conflict lies is in the understanding of cloning, or misunderstanding of cloning.
First, lets start with the 3 different types of cloning, according to the Human Geonome Project website: recombinant DNA technology, reproductive cloning, and therapeutic cloning. Right off the bat lets throw out the first one and last one, they are special types of cloning used for specific traits to be reproduced, to make a Bruce Lee clone, however we would be using reproductive cloning, first made popular by Dolly the sheep.
What happens in reproductive cloning (in layman's terms) is a copy of the entire DNA of the subject you wish to clone is obtained, you throw it in some non-specific host cells, enabling the the dna to take root. Then this fertilized cell is introduced to a host, a similar species to ensure healthy and normal birth/carrying. What you're left with is an absolute recreation of the host.
The reason this kind of cloning is perfect for our Bruce Lee clone is because it yields an almost exact copy of the subject, meaning, most likely, our Bruce Lee clone with be pre-disposed to be exceptional at martial arts. Although it is possible that the clone would show no interest and his talent with martial arts would be limited to a purely physical advantage. The point still being that we would be left with a physical and possssssibly mentally superior martial artist. Or at the very least, an exact replica of Bruce Lee.
The problem seems to be with this type of cloning that arthritis and cancer seem to be an increased concern for the cloned subject. This aside, I would argue to the death that a Bruce Lee clone would rise to the top of the martial arts films.
And whip Chuck Norris's ass. Again.
